Breath Test Devices
In the state of Georgia, police officers use the Intoxilyzer 5000 to test how much alcohol is in a driver's body. This machine takes a sample of the driver's breath alcohol by measuring the amount of alcohol found within the deep lung region. The amount of alcohol in this region is considered comparable to the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream.
There are three main types of breath test devices:
- Breathalyzer Device: This works by utilizing a chemical reaction which changes color when alcohol is present in the breath.
- Intoxilyzer: This uses IR (infrared spectroscopy) to detect alcohol.
- Alco-Sensor III or IV: This has a fuel cell in which the chemical reaction of alcohol takes place.
Each of these tools has a mouthpiece into which the suspected drunk driving blows as well as a sample chamber where the air goes.
Breath Test Reliability
Although these tools are helpful to law enforcement officers in determining if a driver is under the influence of alcohol, they are not as accurate as people may believe. If it can be proven that an error was made in the administration or interpretation of your breath test, your case could be dropped.
